Margaret Gerding
"The Light of Ireland…You’ve heard the stories of how green the Emerald Isle is, but like many things in life you must witness it with your own eyes. I always thought of Ireland as an overcast, grey-skied land of green. What I didn’t realize was the light that illuminates these fields reveals a multitude of greens, one more vibrant than the next. This world is breathtaking, moody, and mysterious all at the same time." - Margaret Gerding, 2023

“'Patchwork'...there is no better way to describe this land and its welcoming people. You have access to walk these fields, their neighbors can use them to garden or graze livestock if they are in need, and they grow lush with a multitude of greens. The earth/rock dictates the shape/size of each patch, and it all fits together with a sense of belonging for all." - Margaret Gerding, 2023

"During my travels, I witnessed, explored, and recorded my experiences with a sketching journal. I kept color notes through small, quick watercolor sketches. These were used to develop the paintings in this show. Whether the painting tells of the morning light in Killarney, or the clouds over the coast, I hope that each piece welcomes viewers to see the beauty that I witnessed." - Margaret Gerding, 2023

ARTIST STATEMENT

"As an artist, my job is to observe as much as to create. With every second that passes, light changes, colors adjust, and the slightest physical shift occurs in nature. Each piece is inspired by a real place, a moment that I have experienced and been inspired by. There is something unique about being alone with nature – a quiet that connects me like no other. It is only in this solitude, whether outside or in the studio, that the landscape reveals itself to me.
In my paintings I am exploring the depth not only that the land has to offer, but also the atmosphere. Living by the coast provides me endless days to study cloud formations and their subtle color changes. Both the earth and the sky must contain a distance for the viewer to look beyond. It is my hope that these paintings allow the viewer to take a quiet moment and reflect on the intimacy and peace this land has to offer." - Margaret Gerding
