“New England marshes remind me of a wonderful childhood, full of joy and freedom. For me they represent spaces that are safe, peaceful, and endless. In the marshes of New England I have always experienced a sense of 'oneness' with nature. It is my place of belonging."

“The first light on dune grass leaves a maze of blades and cast shadows capturing the gentle
breeze that twists everything to and fro, as if trying to find its direction for the day. "Sunrise on the Dunes" is a seemingly simple composition that holds so much complexity."

"The light at mid-day is one of the hardest times to paint. Shadows are hard to find, sun bleaches all colors...and yet, we love to be out during this time. “Two O'clock Blue” was a self-imposed challenge to capture this part of the day, along with that feeling of summer." - Margaret Gerding

"The Light of Ireland…You’ve heard the stories of how green the Emerald Isle is, but like many things in life you must witness it with your own eyes. I always thought of Ireland as an overcast, grey-skied land of green. What I didn’t realize was the light that illuminates these fields reveals a multitude of greens, one more vibrant than the next. This world is breathtaking, moody, and mysterious all at the same time." - Margaret Gerding, 2023

ARTIST STATEMENT
"As an artist, my job is to observe as much as to create. With every second that passes, light changes, colors adjust, and the slightest physical shift occurs in nature. Each piece is inspired by a real place, a moment that I have experienced and been inspired by. There is something unique about being alone with nature – a quiet that connects me like no other. It is only in this solitude, whether outside or in the studio, that the landscape reveals itself to me.
In my paintings I am exploring the depth not only that the land has to offer, but also the atmosphere. Living by the coast provides me endless days to study cloud formations and their subtle color changes. Both the earth and the sky must contain a distance for the viewer to look beyond. It is my hope that these paintings allow the viewer to take a quiet moment and reflect on the intimacy and peace this land has to offer." - Margaret Gerding
