Margaret Gerding
“New England marshes remind me of a wonderful childhood, full of joy and freedom. For me they represent spaces that are safe, peaceful, and endless. In the marshes of New England I have always experienced a sense of 'oneness' with nature. It is my place of belonging." - Margaret Gerding

"Sunset over the Dunes I and II are about those moments in life when everything seems right…it’s as if nature is trying to remind us that there is beauty to be found in this crazy world. This evening light is exceptionally radiant when reflected off the water - setting the pink sand, purple clouds, and lush grasses aglow.” – Margaret Gerding

"White Clouds is a form of cloud investigation for me. Part of my artistic practice is being in nature, taking the time to sit and observe. It takes patience to train one’s eyes to see the subtle color changes; the effort is always a welcome reward.” – Margaret Gerding

ARTIST STATEMENT

"As an artist, my job is to observe as much as to create. With every second that passes, light changes, colors adjust, and the slightest physical shift occurs in nature. Each piece is inspired by a real place, a moment that I have experienced and been inspired by. There is something unique about being alone with nature – a quiet that connects me like no other. It is only in this solitude, whether outside or in the studio, that the landscape reveals itself to me.
In my paintings I am exploring the depth not only that the land has to offer, but also the atmosphere. Living by the coast provides me endless days to study cloud formations and their subtle color changes. Both the earth and the sky must contain a distance for the viewer to look beyond. It is my hope that these paintings allow the viewer to take a quiet moment and reflect on the intimacy and peace this land has to offer." - Margaret Gerding
